It’s never too early to prepare for the festive season!

According to Andy Williams, ‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’ but for employers, it can be a bit of a headache. Christmas and New Year parties, mistletoe, and alcohol-fueled get-togethers, although mostly fun, can result in unacceptable behaviour and potential sicknesses from work.

Do you have a Social Events Policy? And no, it’s not HR being party poopers!

A work-related social event, like a Christmas party, is effectively an extension of the workplace and so an employer is likely to be held vicariously liable for the actions of their employees.
Having something like this in place can set the scene as to what is expected when employees are together outside of the workplace and what the consequences are if something were to happen.

The Work-Related Social Events Policy covers:
• Alcohol use;
• Illegal drugs;
• Not drinking and driving;
• Not tolerating improper conduct and unacceptable behaviour; and
• Employees not bringing the Company’s
name into disrepute.
